The Snow Moon of February 2019 has come and gone, but in the spirit of better late than never, I’ll be sharing the Spirulina Bath Bomb that’s become high on my list of ways to indulge in some simple luxury. My favorite thing about this treat is that I found all the ingredients in my kitchen, so it’s basically safe enough to eat and it didn’t require obscure supplies or a trip to the store.
This seems like a good time to note that I’ve been skeptical of all the buzz around baths recently. Maybe it’s because I don’t have a beautiful bathroom complete with a stone tub like what gets shown as self care these days…Yes, I’ve used bath bombs. Yes, I’ve soaked in Epsom salts. Yes, I’ve taken oatmeal baths. I’ve really taken baths all my life and enjoyed them, but this was a turning point for me in seeing that something so simple does have a lot of potential. More on that in a moment…
Ingredients.
1/6 cup Spirulina powder
1/6 cup Himalayan or epsom salt
1/6 cup mylk of choice (opt.)
Bergamot, lime, & grapefruit essential oils (this blend is really cleansing, you can use any combination based on your desired outcome)
Rose & Calendula flowers were leftovers frozen from Summer for a dye project, but a really nice addition if you have them
You may also choose to add 1/4 to 2 cups of baking soda to your bath. If your skin doesn’t react to it, it can be a nice addition.
I actually added all the ingredients together with some warm water in my Vitamix to ensure everything was well mixed and then poured them in as I was filling the bath, but I’m sure you could just add them straight to the bath if you don’t feel like taking that step.
Disclaimer: Self care should not always look like bubble baths, or justifying online shopping with *treat yo self*, saying yes to things that make you miserable, etc. because the idea that sitting in hot water will make all your problems go away is false.
What I realized here is the thing that makes a bath more than just sitting in hot water, is the intention behind it. As this bath aligned with the Full Moon, I took the opportunity to detox and release, to turn inward and reflect on those things that were no longer serving me and let them go. I went into this with an open mind, allowing it to be an experience rather than just going through the motions. We bathe and shower to cleanse ourselves physically and emotionally on a regular basis, but if we allow the time to do that with intention it makes a difference.
You can choose additional materials that are part of your process and goals, but on this occasion I chose quartz and fire paired with coffee and a good book. In my personal journey, I’m focusing a lot on unblocking my second chakra (Svadisthana) so my literary choice and the mental tone I set aligned with releasing, letting my creativity flow, and allowing this to be a sensual moment for myself. I also advise that you take a moment to clean up your space before hopping into the bath, especially if your intention is detoxification or cleansing. If you just don’t have the energy to do it, let it go. However, in my experience, having your space clean allows you to focus on what you’re doing rather than the clutter and mess around you.
