The Wheel of the Year at the End of the Road
12oz enamel, black rim & handle, white interior. Featuring the same creatures as the bandanas, so this one’s a Friend of the End of the Road special, too. Each design features select flora + fauna that keep us company through the seasons on our 5-acre homestead, telling the ongoing story of what grows, dies, and returns here.
The artwork from our Friends of the Road bandanas, reworked for an enamel mug. The same creatures that keep us company through the seasons here at End of the Road, now built for your favorite beverage instead of your pocket.
🦴 The coyote skull is symbolic of the wild edge we live on. We hear them yipping in the draw behind the house, sometimes close enough to make you pause. Last year on my birthday, I locked eyes with one who'd been picking off our chickens. That direct stare reminded me we're just visitors here, that the wilderness has its own rules. The skull serves as a reminder that death and wildness are always closer than we think. On a homestead, even a small one, death is part of the deal. Nothing personal, just the circle of life. Coyote teaches us to laugh at the cosmic joke of it all.
🍄 The Amanita mushrooms fruiting from its jaw are Autumn's teachers, popping up when everything else is dying back. Decomposition feeding the next round, beautiful but not for eating, magical but respected.
🌲 Spruce boughs and pinecones from the trees that were here long before us. New growth bursts forth each spring as spruce tips, and the pinecones drop like little packages of future forest scattered across the land. Even in the darkest months they stay green, holding the line while everything else sleeps. A crescent moon and stars keep watch over it all, because most of what happens here happens after dark.
🦃 The spruce grouse, aka heart attack chicken, dressed for every season, exploding out of the underbrush when you least expect it. She's here year-round, showing us how to blend in when needed and make noise when it matters. In winter, we hunt them with our guardian dogs, grateful for the sustenance, part of the give and take of living this close to the land.
🌸 And fireweed, Alaska's summer clock, climbing the stalk week by week, painting the hills pink. Come September they give us one last show, burgundy and rust leaves that rival any maple, before dying back until next year.
We chose enamel on purpose. It can survive actually being used: dropped, packed, left out, instead of babied on a shelf. It holds heat longer than ceramic, and the bakeware-grade coating means you can set it right on the wood stove to reheat what's left, no microwave needed. It's the kind of cup that just makes sense out here.
