Savor the Magic of Summer: Hibiscus Syrup

As the sun warms our days and we savor these moments of late summer, nature offers us respite in the hibiscus flower. With its vibrant petals and tart essence, hibiscus isn’t just appealing to the eyes—it’s a treasure trove of flavor and wellness waiting to be unlocked in your kitchen.

Hibiscus isn’t just delicious; it also comes with potential health benefits:

  • Hibiscus is rich in antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin C and anthocyanin
  • Studies suggest hibiscus tea may help lower blood pressure
  • May help fight inflammation

Let’s talk about hibiscus syrup, a simple concoction that can bring a touch of tropical bliss to your everyday routine. Simple syrups are not just tasty; they offer a little ritual that connects us to the earth’s seasonal bounty and our own wellbeing.

In Mexico, hibiscus is cherished in the form of “jamaica” (ha-MY-kah), due to the flower coming to the country by way of Jamaica. Hibiscus flowers can be found at health food stores or your local apothecary or you can check the Mexican spices in your groceries international aisle for ‘jamaica’.

Simple syrups are just that – simple. With the correct ratio of sugar to water, you can work with many different plants for a grounding practice. Sometimes the most nurturing traditions are also the simplest:

Hibiscus Syrup Recipe

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4-1/2 cup hibiscus depending on desired strength
  • A bit of vanilla bean
  • 1/2 lemon

Bring water to a boil.

Add sugar and stir to dissolve.

Add hibiscus, vanilla, squeeze lemon and drop in to mixture.

Heat on low for 10 minutes. Turn off heat and let steep for at least 10 more minutes.

Strain through mesh and cheesecloth to remove all plant material.

Once you have your syrup, the possibilities are endless. But here’s my favorite way to use it—a sparkling mocktail that’s perfect for those moments when you need to pause and refresh:

Sparkling Hiblisscus Mocktail

  • A splash of your homemade hibiscus syrup
  • Bubbly sparkling water (I use our SodaStream)
  • A few ice cubes
  • A squeeze of lime

As you sip this vibrant drink, take a moment to appreciate the energy and medicine of the radiant hibiscus flower. This small ritual can be an act of self-care and a celebration of summer’s bounty and flavors.

Remember, wellness isn’t about perfection. It’s about finding little ways to honor yourself and the world around you. So whether you’re sharing this drink with friends or enjoying a quiet moment alone, let it be a reminder to slow down, savor the simple things, and remember that there is magic in the mundane and ritual in the everyday.
